i left the TSS last night.. as dispirited as I felt after the Bath City defeat but for different reasons. Against Bath it was a matter of being outcompeted and outfought in what should have been a blood-and-fire Derby. Last night it was anger at the squandering of what had been an excellent first half of football between two good sides and the depressing return to our old.. and for me.. bad habits of sitting back, encouraging the press and then getting spectacularly undone by doing so. Inexplicably, we began the 2nd half with a series of dangerous passes across our own area, for which we were lucky not to get punished there and then... only then to go one worse and return to the discredited, repeated, ludicrous short goal kicks that brought no advantage or reward at all and encouraged some of the most predatory forwards in the NLS to get at us. The ball barely left our half .. and then Bingo! we were 2-1 down , not playing to the whistle, and suddenly had lost all the threat and enterprise that we had shown in the first half. Then the cherry on the cake... the 3rd goal which was a fittingly farcical indictment of our high-risk/low-reward play and which badly tarnished what had been 45 minutes of excellent, competitive football that had begun the evening. We seemed to be slave to an ideology/methodology that achieved absolutely nothing except allowing Torquay to keep running at us. I felt we lost that game.. rather than Torquay winning it. A very grumpy Rambler here .. even after a night to let the dust settle.

I wasn’t at HP last night, so settled for watching it on DAZN instead. Hats off to the commentator.
Hard to disagree, I feel Torquay’s professional status and fitness showed in the second half. Realistically we should never be competing with these kind of sides, and we gave a good account of ourselves in the first 45. They were just better than us second half.
FWIW, and this showed on the TV, it’s an awful challenge on Poffley right above the ankle after he’d got to the ball first, and it should have been a red card.
Unbeaten run comes to an end and we’re into a run on four games against play-off sides, we’ll do well to add to our tally but thankfully recent form and performances have given us a more than comfortable buffer to ride through these fixtures

The third goal for Torquay summed up our home performances to date this season.
I fully accept that the referee was appalling, especially when he chickened out of sending off the Torquay player for an horrendous tackle on Poffley, but Gary and CO’s obsession with the playing out from the back needs to be reined in or home attendance’s will fall away!
I want to be positive but like others I left the ground depressed over our style of play!!

Well into time added on, 2-1 down and our goalie has the ball. Logic says that he boots it up field and we try for a route one goal and a possible point. No this Chippenham town and no matter what we play from the back because that's our way. Well that worked out well didn't it and we end up 3-1 down at the final whistle. They say be careful what you write on here as management and players read the forum, we if they do they take no notice. We have this rigid style of play which is more focused on side to side rather than going forward and then on the occasions we are on the edge of the box the next thing you know Will Henry had the ball rolling it out to a full back. We're safe from relegation and little hope of the playoff's so lets shake things up a bit and play with a bit more bravado .

Unfortunately - Don't think it surprised many of us that it panned out the way it did last night.
Thought that towards half time we got a bit of a hold of the game with the excellent Dawes linking up well with Gravata on the left side and the equaliser was deserved. 2nd half it looked like the usual game plan came into operation - the cautious, safe, style of play where the passing goes side to side and it takes 6 or 7 passes to move forward 25 yards. Didn't think Torquay were any great shakes either and could of been rattled by a more assertive opponent.
It needs to be livened up to be honest - the Development/Academy style, defensive and cautious culture being played out at home is uninspiring and not leading to a good football experience.

I'll get the negatives out of the way first. We have now played 18 games (plus 1 cup game) at home and won 5 of them. In the NLS home table we sit 20th out of 24. Last night I would estimate there was no more than 450 Chippenham supporters in attendance for what was a very attractive looking fixture on a nice evening for watching football. The referee (interestingly named Mr Pratt) was very very poor. I must reiterate what has been written above, playing out from the back so obviously just does not work.
On a positive note I thought Will Dawes was outstanding until forced off and for most of the first half we more than matched Torquay. I would also say that Freddie Grant, Jac Poffley and Tom Mehew (apart from some wayward shooting) had good games.

Previous posts pretty well sum up last night’s game. First half went forward at Torquay with some lovely football. Then in the second half back to type and let Torquay take control. They may have upped the tempo in the second half but that’s not an excuse for the way we played after the break. We certainly excel in being able to turn attack into defence. Lose count of the number of times in a game where a Chippenham player is facing the opponents goal and then turns and passes the ball backwards. As has been said on numerous occasions on this forum the style of football we play at home does not draw in the crowd. It is boring not entertaining and certainly not effective. You would have thought after 9 home defeats the management might have realised this. Looking at the league table the goals for tally back up the comments on here. There are only 3 teams who have scored less goals at home than us (away only one side,Dorking, have scored than us). Says it all on how we approach home games.

Agree with all of the above - I can count on one hand the games I’ve felt truly entertained this season. Will Henry probably had more touches than some of our outfield players. Ours is a high risk strategy, and it’s deadly boring. And another thing - why do we more often than not it seems, kick up the slope in the second half, or is it my imagination? There must be some rationale for this, I’d like to know if this is another master plan - we surely can’t lose the toss every week?
On the positive side I’m not complaining about where we are in the league table. By the end of February we were safely in mid-table, no threat of relegation or flirting with the possibility of promotion (that would surely kill us if it ever happened - perhaps a debate for a separate thread). For a club of our size it’s no mean feat and should be applauded. There’s a lot to be proud of at CTFC, we only gripe because we care.

Well, I enjoyed the game, and thought we had a chance of getting an equaliser right up to the end. Torquay's 3rd goal wasn't really due to playing out from the back, it was just an individual error from Will. If he has to make one of those per season, 2-1 down in the 99th minute is not a bad time to do it ;-)
Surprised that the foul on Poffley wasn't a straight red - I've seen them given for much less than that.
I wasn't counting yellow cards, but it seemed like 4 or 5 each. the difference is that all of Torquay's cards were for professional fouls, while all of Chippenham's were for dissent. Can anyone confirm that?

You're right, back in the day we always opted to play down the slope in the second half. Even if we were a couple of goals behind, you still fancied us to get something from the game, as we surged forward, roared on by a packed stand behind the goal. Fast forward to the present and the scene is one of rows and rows of empty seats. The valiant efforts of those gathered around the drummer, were much appreciated, but when Freddie Grant was waving his arms in the air, urging the supporters to raise the atmosphere, there simply wasn't enough fans to make an impact.
