The Big Game...

So after a somewhat subdued Saturday where we did all but pull the ball in the net, we can now look forward to the buzz and excitement that comes with the build up to an FA Cup fixture.

Lots of people shared the same opinion on Saturday. we completely dominated Welling and they were far from the strong side that they have been in recent years in the division however, with many players cautious over challenges and naturally not wanting to injure themselves ahead of the biggest game in recent history, you can forgive the lads for not being over zealous. Horrible conditions for football with the rain coming down particularly hard in the second half making it a real test to move the ball about with any fluidity. Personally my MoM could be one of two, Will Richards was superb and looked like he hasn't missed a beat with his long term injury, comfortable assured performance that fills me with confidence that against Northampton, we can handle the big aerial presence of their target man Smith. But, just edging it for me in terms of performance was Tom Whelan, an absolute revelation in the centre of midfield. I have watched Tom a couple of times now and his vision and ability to pick the pass is what Chippenham fans have been crying out for since the departure of Josh Smile but, I think Whelan adds more than Smile could. Quicker, more combatant in the tackle, far more physical and harder to move off the ball and looks to have an eye for goal with a couple of attempts running close including the late strike off the foot of the post resulting in the disallowed goal from the rebound. Karnell with a little more composure had a couple of good chances to put the game to bed, especially the one vs one just needing to roll the ball past the keeper but he is a young lad and the eyes light up in front of goal, sometimes a flash of madness creeps in.

Great to see the Chairman with a wry smile on his face at the weekend. It is by now no secret that certain comments have been quite hurtful to the chairman, as in his words "He doesn't do this for commercial gain" It is purely the love of the club and his desire to see it advance but as always, the silver lining was just how supportive everyone can be in times like this. Neil is the captain of the good ship Chippenham and like every other person on board, he is one with emotions and feelings and as mentioned, those feelings were somewhat hurt and the rally around Neil on Saturday I am sure is the reason why he was one of the last to leave the bar and smiling over a drink with the Chippenham faithful.

Great to see Mark and Horgs in good spirits as well. Evidently disappointed not to pick up the result we deserved Saturday but again, all smiles after as we take an 11 game unbeaten stretch into the game against Northampton. I have spoken to a couple of Northampton fans and there really is only one set of supporters currently excited for this weekend and it is not the guys from League 2.  On our pitch (which must be said, was fantastic even after the game on Saturday) Northampton will not have it all their own way. I am confident that if we can get a foothold early in the game, we have every chance of causing the upset here.

Amazing response from those who are looking to lend a hand to the club on Sunday also, with a large group of additional volunteers making themselves known to the club for a game such as this to go off without a hitch, it really shows a true community and club spirit when people pull together in such a way and it's a real testament to the love of Chippenham as a football club we all have.

This Sunday is going to be monumental for Chippenham as a club, with the £12,500 on offer, the some £30,000 odd already banked and the chance to play Northampton for a further £36,000 and an almost guaranteed £100,000 should we make the 2nd Round with television being almost a given for us should we reach Round 2 and the likelihood of the same, if not an even bigger crowd to add to the coffers making this arguably the biggest financial game in the history of the football club. Of course Chichester City are already going to be the darlings of the 2nd Round and rightly so however, this is our chance to grab a little bit of that media spotlight and really show people what is going on in Chippenham with football. With all of us packed into one half of the stadium for the game, there is going to be an absolute sea of blue and hopefully a wall of noise to roar this fine football team home. I know it's said often but to re-emphasise, the manager, the players they absolutely thrive off the support of the fans, vocally and otherwise. If you can shout the word Chippenham or clap your hands please, do so! Join in, your voice alone might not be huge but in groups of hundreds, we can make this a very intimidating game for Northampton, force a little mistake, give our boys that additional push, let's be that 12th man advantage that comes with a home game and let's make history together as one club.

As of this morning, Northampton Town had sold 630 terrace tickets. That's an increase of only 80 since last Tuesday, suggesting that most of their fans intending to travel have already bought theirs. When added to their small seat allocation and any last minute sales, that's probably going to amount to a maximum of 700.

I'd love to think that we could sell 1,800 tickets. Does anyone know what we've sold so far?

What? We could sell 1800 tickets? We’re not playing Melksham Town, you know! 😀

Re: The Big Game...

We struggled to get 500 last weekend vs Welling. Non-league is tough. A town like Chippenham should be pushing 800+ EVERY week but for some reason people stay away. No idea why.

Re: The Big Game...

I reckon it’ll end up around 2,250 in attendance.  That’s plenty in our ground when you consider the far side, although undercover, doesn’t lend itself to much more than a single line of spectators.  Would be nice to have some terracing on that side one day.  No doubt it’s on the list.

Re: The Big Game...

I know non league attendances have declined a little the past decade or so, but is a little disappointing that its not looking likely we'll sell out one of our biggest games in the history, especially when we did at this round in 2005 against a fellow non league side!

I do, we are a Rugby Town/area. When Bath RFC are playing at home more people from Chippenham travel to watch them than we get for a home attendance.
Doesn't mean we can't attract new younger followers but IMHO the club is very poor at marketing its self to new fans.
The Torquay and Northampton games are a clear example of this.

Re: The Big Game...

I think 2800 is the capped capacity for this one with Northampton taking 1000 of those tickets and us retaining 1800. You also have to take into account that the numbers above are only tickets physically SOLD by the football club. This game will break the 2000 mark and that for me would be deemed a success I think. I only have one other reference point for a game of this size at home and that is Vauxhall at the Vase Semi, but you have to consider that with that game, everyone in the town and had been slowly paying attention to the fact Chippenham were creeping closer to Wembley Stadium, Bedlington at home was a big attendance as well from memory and the town was being constantly hit with reminders of these occasions through the local rag and other sources. Unpopular opinion but I don't think enough has been done to market the game to the people of Chippenham, the casual football supporters who we are looking to engage with such an occasion and my only hope is that once we have the additional 300-400 Chippenham supporters in the ground that we do something to try and drag them back.

We are in a luxurious position with Northampton being only the second of a potential 5 game run at home with Welling already gone (and sadly larger amounts of tickets that I thought would move closer to the game would move at Welling and that was destroyed by the weather) then of course the big game against Northampton in the FA Cup but then a home game the following Saturday against Slough (who need no introduction), Tuesday night against early playoff contenders Hemel Hempstead and then a potential home tie in the FA Trophy the following Saturday.

We need to do all we can not only on the pitch but in the terraces and in the "Marketing and Commercial" areas to ensure that the people who are coming to the Northampton game "just because" turn into a portion of our gate for certainly the next two fixtures at home and hopefully a third in the FA Trophy a fortnight later. It's a monumental fortnight for the future success of the club, we have seen how hard it is to make this stage of the FA Cup in recent years, with now even bigger clubs playing in the National League and huge budgets across the North and South Divisions, Chippenham are very blessed to be here and we need to make the most of it, as there is no guarantee we come back next season for another crack at getting this right.

So I really hope that we have looked into how we are going to get these casual fans to come back, if we have placed any "deals/special offers" on the following games. Personally I would be looking at targeting these people actively whilst we have them in the ground. Collections for the Bluebirds Budget Boost! We have often walked around with collections for various other causes and with a degree of success, we should be looking out for ourselves in our biggest fixture of the season to date. Can we grab a few extra quid out of people, can we squeeze anything out of our travelling supporters. For example the gauntlet heading up to the Main Entrance, merchandise, 50/50 tickets, programmes etc. Is this going to replicated at the Sheldon End entrance as more often than not on occasions like this, away fans simply get shepherded in and out and the only emphasis is on them not disrupting the peace. This is not going to be a malicious terrace battle, there is going to be no trouble to worry about here so now we focus out energies elsewhere, how can we make these guys spend money. Logistically, we cannot make money on bar from Northampton, it's simply not big enough, and we cannot due to restrictions that still blow my mind, serve them alcohol from a bottle bar and plastics down by the old club shop. So how can we get them engaged in the day and quick to their wallets. If they have sold some 700 tickets, wouldn't it be fantastic if we could just chuck a bucket down the far end for the Budget Boost, operate a 50/50 ticket sale at their end of the ground and make them feel as associated with the day as possible.

It's only Tuesday and my birthday is on the Saturday, I said to my colleague this morning what is crazy is I could not care less for my own birthday as I am just looking forward to Sunday and the best present of all. A big game, at the ground I love, with the club I adore and hopefully a massive day in the clubs history, result pending ;)

Do you know this is actually a very good point well made. I think often as a football fan I forget that the oval demon looms large around these parts. With Bath, Bristol and Gloucester all having rather successful teams playing at a big level, and of course Chippenham itself having about 4 sides playing competitive rugby. Not the mention Swindon, Forest Green and Bristol U23 Academy sides plying their trade at Stanley Park, the competition for supporters has never been so high.

I do think also that Wellard is not far wrong from his comments about marketing the club to the town. We as a club on the field have taken a step forward in stature from our Western League, Southern League days. I think that we need to try and do the same with other aspects of the club. We have never watched a better level of football. Neil, John, Jason and the board have delivered us a dream, of course now maybe it is time we lent our hands to help them realise the next step. I personally have never conversed with a more approachable and open board of Directors when it comes to ways to achieve goals, if anyone can help with things like this, or has ideas about how to market the club better in the town, I know they would be very open to suggestion, a quick letter, a casual chat in the ground or even an e-mail through to the club.

We are all in this together people, of course we have figureheads and people with bigger roles than others but empires are not forged by the work of a solitary emperor it's the work of the thousands that surround him that allow for an empire to flourish.. ALL HANDS ON DECK PEOPLE..
