It’s not very often I come on this forum as well you know ;) ok I joke of course. I live on here and when I’m not on here, I’m on Twitter, Facebook etc keeping updated with the football club and it’s goings on. The reason I do this is love, passion and commitment to the club I’ve loved since I was a boy. Many people love this club the same way, more so even. But only one man exemplifies all of those things with cold, hard backing. One man has taken Chippenham from a standard of football beneath what we’ve come to know. One man had a vision to build a club. That man is Neil Blackmore. There were countless chairmen before him and this is not to diminish any of their work but Neil sits in the throne now, so imagine my disappointment to hear fans of the club, people I stand with on terraces, sing with in bars and travel the country with have made horrendous comments about the man who’s work has put Chippenham where it currently lies.
We have covered this topic in a previous post but I think it’s become a little more than just an innocent conversation where people’s opinion can reign supreme. When Mr Blackmore is having correspondence fed back to him of supporters “threatening to rip up season tickets” over the change of the name of a stadium and accusing Mr Blackmore of “vanity” this really upsets me as a supporter of not the man, but the club.
Now there can be no accusation here of me being a board member under alias, the alias has been here too long. Most people know who I am, I’m Simon Lawrence, a self confessed passionate loud mouth from Allington Way residing in Portsmouth and travel week in week out to follow the club that I have always loved. Total marmite character at the club. I know some that I can call the best friends in the world, and I know there are some that smile sweetly and humour me with a begrudging nod as their views do not coincide with mine, and that’s absolutely fine.
I have known Neil Blackmore a long time, I was at school with his boy Lee, primary school so going back some 25 years and back then Neil was a man who just lived his football, came to our school games like any other and his family are a lovely, helpful and generous bunch. He is the last man who could ever be accused of vanity, he is a man who has shunned the spotlight as Chippenham under his guidance have won league titles, embarked on Cup runs, signed players, let players go but has always, ALWAYS ran the club in a way that people can’t help but respect and admire.
Neil came to me personally a few years back after a little controversy and asked me in person, man to man to curb certain aspects of what a few were doing, knowing that I was surrounded by them and had the ability to coerce them to stop, to make the club support a little more PG and I think most would concede this a successful venture.
That’s the kind of chairman Neil is, a decent, honest, hardworking chap who quite honestly we are lucky to have at the helm. So for people who don’t understand business and think this is about a man’s ego, an ego that from the stories above I can personally guarantee isn’t there.. let me spell it out for you.
In business, everyone has a boss, even MDs. To an MD their bosses are the shareholders, the customers and as always, the accountant! With the amount of money Neil puts through the club, for what little commercial gain hisself and his business get out of that affiliation. Can you honestly not join the dots here?? Is it probably to appease some other business concerns.
So the change of the name to The Thornbury Surfacing Stadium offers a little extra bang for the buck in which Neil and company put through this football club. Anyone who is in defiance of that, needs their heads checking. Feel free to bang underneath this post just how grateful, how lucky and how privileged we are to have Neil Blackmore as he does this for love, appreciation and his own passion for the club and the town.
I’ll start.. “Thank you Mr Blackmore, despite all our obvious differences as characters and men we have something in common, we love this club. The difference is you have given me a better club to love, better football to watch and more than I could ever have dreamed of as a Chippenham fan. You are the heartbeat of this club and if you ever want to know how respected you are, I even stopped swearing for you. Thank you again Neil, without you, we are just not the same club”

These words are bang on. Neil Blackmore is one of the most selfless, kind and generous men I’ve ever met. He’s loves this club more than any that makes him so approachable and relatable to the fans. The fact that fans are threatening to ‘rip up season tickets’ over a name change is absurd. And to simply forget about everything Neil has done for the club over this is just ridiculous and whoever thinks like this needs to have a proper think to themselves. I’ve been watching this football club since I was very young and the progression I’ve watched is just astounding. And it’s all down to Neil. Of course Mark and Gary and various other people at the club have had a massive impact on the club and I’m forever grateful for that but Neil is the one that brought that all together. Made this football club something to be proud of. And for that, I eternally thank him

Above anyone Neil Blackmore is by far the most important man at Chippenham town, above players, managers and any other staff. That’s not too say others don’t do their bit but ultimately without Neil’s financial input over the last few years this football club would be a shadow of what it currently is. Call it Blackmore park!!

Couldn’t have worded this better myself. We’re playing at a level we’ve only dreamed of playing, reaching FA cups, defying expectations - yes you can thank the Players, you can thank Mark and the team, but dig a little deeper and you’ll find a man who’s been the backbone of this club for years. The ups & downs, the controversy and heartbreak, he’s been there with us through it all. He’s a fan, like us, and no one can ever take that away from him. You may not agree with everything he says or does, people can’t please everyone, but open your eyes and realise just how lucky we are to have him here. Without him, our dream crumbles. He’s been honest, hard working, always approachable, and I personally have never had any issues with him, or his family. Wake up and smell the coffee, this man has given us local football at a level we love. We’ve said goodbye to Taunton, and hello to Torquay United. Neil, we thank you, without you our Saturday’s wouldn’t be the same. Thank you for all you’ve done, and all you continue to do. #pride&passion.

Couldn’t have worded it better myself. All I like to say thank you to Mr Blackmore. Without you this club wouldn’t be where we are today. I am very shocked to see people saying they would rip their season ticket up over a stadium name change. I’ve grow up watching Chippenham and as a fan I’ve enjoyed every minute I watch. Without Neil we wouldn’t see big names at our club. If he wants to change the stadium name let him he deserves the right to with amount of money he throws into our club. I think we should have a stand named after him as well but that’s my opinion.

What Simon said, If I put down all of my feelings about this I think all I would do is repeat everything he said.
Neil, thank you. 99.9% of people are totally behind you and the accusations of vanity are just plain ridiculous. Whatever the reasons for renaming the ground everybody recognises that we are where we are because of the investment you have made in the club and on the cusp of a huge FA cup game we should be united behind you, Mark and Gary and the team. What's in a name??

Did I see anything personal written? I fully understand why it's been done, but don't like it. Same with my neighbours extension, but we still talk.
As for someone ripping his tickets up, provided he paid for them, who cares!
And thanks for your efforts Mr B.
COYB!

It’s not just messages on the forum unfortunately, there are a few channels including personally in which comments of a nature that’s a little south of friendly have been made.
You can’t know who I am RP I disguised it so well ;)
The full story I think is one that unless totally looked at from a business perspective is one that many won’t see. They may see it as opportunistic or a business decision from TS but I think without being able to reveal too much, Neil has earned the trust of the supporters and if someone is going to be a stadium sponsor then I’m personally over the moon it’s Neil’s company that has given so much over the years..
It may not be forever, like many have said. The ground will stand a long time after Neil and the current regime but this is right for the club in the present moment for reasons I am sure Mr Blackmore has considered...
He has my full support for one
