Sad news of the passing of Mel Cooper, a prominent local player from the late 60’s into the 80’s. If you’re of a certain vintage you’ll remember Mel playing for the Town around the time we entered the Hellenic League for the first time, 68/69, and being part of the team that beat Melksham in the final of the Wiltshire Senior Cup in front of over 1,600 supporters at Frome Road, Trowbridge. I loved watching that team with my mates behind the goal, they were our heroes.
Mel went on to play for Corsham, where I had the pleasure of playing alongside him towards the end of his playing days. He was a lovely bloke who gave countless hours of service to Corsham Town over many years, one of those unsung heroes that make non-league clubs tick. RIP Mel, and thanks for the memories.
