Basingstoke

Interesting match preview on their forum, where they refer to us as The Magpies (would have been suitable in the 1950’s or so when we played in black and white). They claim to have a long injury list but appears that several players’ fitness will be decided on the day. They claim they are bringing strong support so hopefully boost what usually proves to be a lower than average crowd in these early rounds.

Re: Basingstoke

Not sure how we’ll approach this one with the Yeovil game on the horizon - the starting lineup (especially up front) will give us a clue I suspect. Hard one to call, they were decent in the pre-season game (although that’s no real indicator) and will no doubt be up for it, a la Hungerford.  No score prediction but 385 on the gate.

Re: Basingstoke

1-0 down, then 1-1 after 90 minutes. Won 3-2 on penalties! Get in!

Re: Basingstoke

Decent result. Hopefully we get someone local in the next round.

Re: Basingstoke

If we play the way we did in the first half today against Yeovil on Tuesday we will be well beaten.  Our second half performance which  was a quantum step-up in terms of quality, suggests a really good game with the League leaders.  We bossed it for the first 10 minutes then barely reached the Basingstoke area for the rest of the half.  They were direct, hard-working and unsubtle and it worked.  Their goal was fortuitous but not against the run of play.  We just seemsed unbalanced and lacking any fire-power up front.  Cue the introduction of Fas and Spokes after half time and we suddenly looked a different team with pace and intent.  Basingstoke offered very little in the second half... except a slew of time-wasting tactics that cost them 6 or 7?? yellow cards. ( and Gary too I think for protesting against said tactics).  The late late equaliser was well deserved.  and the penalties well taken.  Credit to Basingstoke who had support in numbers and made their presence felt throughtout ( apart from the  obnoxious,  combative pair in the Stand near us who seemed to have forgotten the laws of reasonable decorum and how to behave as guests at another Club's ground... insulting all those around them).  That gave an added pleasure to the success of the shoot-out. Worrying to see Alex Bray depart, though.  Otherwise, we seemed to come through relatively unscathed.

Re: Basingstoke

That first half performance was woeful except for the first 5 minutes. We were outplayed for well over half an hour and even in the second half we kept making silly mistakes that could have cost us dear. At some point that goal kick malarkey is going to have to be scrapped. We're just not good enough to play out from the back. The pass from one of the two goalkeeper's assistants either happens too early and doesn't draw the opposition player in to a position we can benefit from or far too late causing the opposition to be on us from our own goal kick. Just kick it up field and let the midfield do their job. That being winning the ball and getting it to someone who is in a position to shoot.

Re: Basingstoke

Managed to get the win in the end but another mixed performance. First half we were at our very worst but with the half time changes much better in the second half.
Team selection bit baffling. At home in a cup match and you start with one striker. Really! And for most of the first half McClure was more in his own half trying to get the ball. Taking far too long to get the ball forward too much back and sideways passing. Why Owen-Evans started after been out for so long? Would have made more sense starting with Spokes and bringing Owen-Evans on in the second half. Good to see ref adding on sensible amount of time

Re: Basingstoke

Good to get through. Maybe a run in this competition is due. First half not good. Basingstoke sharp at times and our midfield struggled to get a foothold in the game. Seemed a bit lightweight. Pleased Gary acted early with  substitutions, especially putting Spokes on in midfield. Going sideways and backwards so much and so slowly is predictable for the opposition. We don't seem to move teams around with this methodical approach. Late on we looked more threatening when less complicated - mixing things up, getting in the occasional cross. Fas again made a difference through the middle - always on the move and willing to run in behind defences which McClure (maybe because we do not play forward quickly or simply because he is not that type of player?) does not do. Thought McClure played so deep first half that we had no-one up front. It looked like he was in midfield second half.

Re: Basingstoke

First half poor and their early deflected goal helped their game plan of time wasting/defending - that isn’t sour grapes as I thought they did it well. Second half subs helped as did the formation change and we deserved the equaliser and arguably the win in normal time. To be as dominant as we were with 10 men was really good.

Don’t know the thinking behind line up but guess there has to be some squad rotation. Owen-Evans needs more minutes, that was clear. Injuries a concern but part of it.

Unbeaten in 5 and showed good character and commitment to the cause.

Re: Basingstoke

Small correction, Argus.  McClure was substituted at half-time.. so in dug-out for 2nd half.
